IT Division Develops GEMS for ExxonMobil Fuels Marketing
YEI’s Information Technology Services Division recently developed a Global Engineering Management System (GEMS) for ExxonMobil Fuels Marketing. GEMS is made up of two major components: Engineering Data Management System (EDMS) and Project Pipeline Information System (PPIS).
The EDMS aids engineers in establishing the different pieces of equipment that are required for each individual project. Each piece of equipment is described and associated to its manufacturer and its cost. This information is updated automatically through links to the main computer’s SAP based systems. The equipment is then sorted and placed on standard equipment lists that are used to “build” a project equipment with a minimum of modifications, since the projects are all standardized.
The PPIS is aimed at controlling and following up the execution of capital expenditures. It is an excellent tool for stewarding capital expenditure in a multi-country environment. An additional feature is its inter-functionality, as this tool is used by Real Estate, Network Planning, Retail Engineering, Safety-Health-Environment, and Convenience Store Marketers.
Both components also provide a multitude of reports, in excess of 50, for the different end users of the information, be it field engineers or high level managers.
The GEMS application has integrated both EDMS and PPIS into one single package. GEMS is a multi-country application that relies on the interchange of database contents through e-mail thus reducing the connectivity time of the field to the main servers.
The field engineer will now have more control over what has to be purchased for a project, with relatively updated and recent costs, while at the same time he/she will be able to keep track of the cost expenditure of the project, country and region.
GEMS has been installed throughout Europe and Africa as well as in Australia and Singapore. Future installations are planned for countries in the Far East and Central and South America.
