Operations & Maintenance
Hazardous Waste Specialist
NASA Ames Research Center, CA
Education: AA, AS, or related technical school desired. 2 years in safety related field plus 3 years directly related experience.

Job Description: Perform duties related to hazardous materials use, handling, retention, distribution, and disposal.
  • Technical competence in safety
  • Work with and function as part of a team
  • Operate various types of heavy equipment, forklifts, loaders, backhoe, commercial truck, boom lift, scissor lift
Qualifications:
  • Hazardous Material Industrial Technician, Haz-Mat Specialist, Asbestos Technician and/or Lead Worker or HAZWOPER is desired.
  • CPR/First Aid/AED, valid California driver’s license, Class A license is required for this position and must be presented upon hire or obtained by the end of the 90-day probationary period.
  • Computer skills in MS Word and Excel. Excellent written and oral communication skills
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Actively participates in safety training programs
  • Participate as a member of the Disaster Utility Control Team
  • Conduct site and facilities inspections
  • Serve as first responder to hazardous spills and other emergencies
  • Ability to be to “On-Call” and to respond to a call-out within one (1) hour to the location
  • Ability to mitigate through the application of corrective or preventative action
  • Perform surveillance related to hazardous material abatement program and maintain the Hazard Abatement Log
  • Capable of performing limited asbestos and/or lead abatement work (up to 100 square or linear feet) in support of maintenance activities
  • May conduct and/or support accident/injury investigations
  • Reviews and/or coordinates incident reporting
  • Work with internal and external emergency services as required
  • Participate in disaster preparedness planning and exercises
  • Monitor green waste and composing operations, as well as participate in soil and water testing and analysis

HSE/Construction Safety Engineer
NASA Ames Research Center, CA
Education: A bachelor’s degree in occupational safety and health is desired, but not required. American Red Cross adult CPR/AED/First Aid certificate is required.

Job Description: Applies Safety Standards that embrace a range of subject matters which align directly or indirectly with the safety and protection of staff and subcontractors. Reports to the AFSS Sr. Safety Supervisor.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of 5 years of HSE/Construction Safety experience performing duties in a construction environment
  • American Red Cross adult CPR/AED/First Aid certificate is required
  • Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and good driving record
  • Obtain the Fall Prevention Competent Person Certification within 90 days of hire
  • OSHA 30 Construction certification is required at time of hire and will become a condition of employment after hire
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Support the Construction Project Managers in anticipating, identifying, analyzing and mitigating job safety hazards that are relevant to construction projects through Site Specific Safety Planning and/or through Corrective and/or Preventative Action or completed analysis
  • Support the Construction Project Managers in understanding the significant safety, health and environmental aspects that are relevant to projects; in part will fulfill the role of the OSHA Site Safety Health Officer
  • Continuously evaluate construction projects to maintain an incident and injury free work environment while ensuring compliance with local, state and federal EHS regulations
  • Provide technical expertise and consultation during pre-job planning throughout work activities
  • Conduct safety inspections and document near misses, injuries, and accidents
  • Participate in Emergency Planning
  • Provide on-going communication to supervision and management concerning EHS program performance
  • Actively demonstrate and further develop a Culture of Caring leading to an injury free and productive work environment
  • Work conditions will be indoors and outdoors. Will require the use of ladders (portable and fixed). Work activities may be on roofs, elevated platforms including scaffolding, or in underground vaults and confined spaces
Status: Exempt.
Salary: $95K - $115K, based on experience

Plumber/Fire Sprinkler Technician
NASA Ames Research Center, CA
Education: High School Diploma or equivalent

Qualifications:
  • Demonstrated knowledge of NFPA 25, State, and Local codes
  • Experience working with fire sprinkler systems, including knowledge of maintaining all water and deluge foam fire protection systems
  • Knowledgeable in the operation and installation of various high temperature water and high-pressure piping systems
  • Skilled in the use of hand and power tools common to the plumbing trade
  • Ability to understand and apply codes, blueprints, diagrams, and engineering drawings
  • Effective interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills
  • Completion of Plumber/Pipefitter apprenticeship
  • Four years journey-level plumbing
  • Must possess a valid state driver's license
  • Successful candidate will be subject to a drug screen and background check
Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Test, maintain, and repair fire sprinkler systems, fire pumps, flow switches, and all other plumbing related parts of fire sprinkler systems. Install additional piping and heads as needed, on a capital outlay basis
  • Perform quarterly, annual, and 5-year maintenance on all water and deluge foam fire protection systems
  • Perform routine inspections of existing fire sprinklers to ensure that systems are operating properly
  • Inspect new fire sprinkler installations to ensure proper installation and workmanship
  • Assist in maintaining a database of the location of all zone valves, spare head boxes, zone cards, drain valves, backflow devices, and other items of importance to fire sprinkler repair and maintenance
  • Inspect structures to ascertain obstructions to be avoided to prevent weakening of structure resulting from installation of pipe
  • Support Plumbers, as needed, with plumbing maintenance and repair duties including installs and repairs to pipes, fittings, and fixtures of heating, water, and drainage systems according to specifications and plumbing codes.
  • Support can include:
    • Cutting and threading pipe using pipe cutters, cutting torch, and pipe-threading machine. Bend pipe to required angle by use of pipe-bending machine or by placing pipe over block and bending it by hand
    • Assemble and install valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic using hand tools and power tools
    • Join pipe by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, plastic solvent, and caulks joints
    • Fill pipe system with water or air and reads pressure gauges to determine whether system is leaking
    • Install and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, commodes, bathtubs, water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, and water softeners
    • Repair and maintain plumbing by replacing washers in leaky faucets, mending burst pipes, and opening clogging drains
  • Study building plans and working drawings to determine work aids required and sequence of installations
  • Coordinate work with building occupants and personnel in other departments, offices, and shops
  • Perform other duties as requested
